White to off-white, ball shape granule with particle size similar to feed. Odourless, stable to light and heat, freely soluble in water.

Sodium butyrate provides butyric acid, a key energy source for intestinal epithelial cells. It enhances the growth, repair, and differentiation of intestinal villi, leading to a villus length increase of up to 30%. This boosts intestinal surface area for nutrient absorption and improves feed conversion rates. Feed intake may increase by up to 10%, particularly in young animals like piglets and chicks.

Sodium butyrate stimulates gastric acid secretion, supporting efficient digestion of proteins and other nutrients in animals with immature digestive systems.

Butyric acid is a potent antimicrobial agent. In its undissociated form, it penetrates harmful bacteria, disrupts intracellular pH balance, and impairs microbial metabolism. This natural mode of action helps reduce pathogenic bacteria in the gut, supporting a balanced microbiota and enhancing intestinal health without relying on antibiotics.

While sodium butyrate has a strong smell to humans, animals—especially piglets—are attracted to the slightly sweet, milk-like scent of butyric acid. This familiar aroma mimics maternal milk and enhances feed palatability, encouraging early feed intake and smoother weaning transitions in young animals.
